As the cost of living in the San Francisco Bay Area continues to rise and available space dwindles fewer affordable venues are available for budding or alternative performing artists to develop their work. In order to reverse this tide, two sound designers, Theodore J.H. Hulsker and Matt Stines began hosting a monthly event, Klanghaus, at Theodore’s Oakland residence. In addition to providing a venue for unusual happenings, these events foster, empower and diversify our performing arts community.
It's also a lot of fun.
At the end of 2015, Klanghaus and its affiliated artists began to develop a multimedia theatrical work that dramatizes our personal experiences with the costs of living and working as artists in the Bay Area. Since then, we have staged two different iterations of A Play About Leaving. The first was during my artist residency at the Light Box in Detroit and the second at the new alternative arts space, and former accordion factory , Fixed Freedom in San Francisco.
We envision A Play About Leaving as a continually evolving work that examines the commonalities between the struggles of artists working in different environments and cities. In 2016 we received a CA$H grant to take our show to Los Angeles for further development. Look for it this summer!
